KC, It has to do with gender (word) and if it's singular or plural.

In the example above: "María va al baile con Enrique", 'baile' (the dance) is masculine, so...(to) 'a' combines with (the) 'el' instead of (the) 'la', which is feminine, to form 'al'.

So, 'de la' is: (of the) -- for feminine singular, 'de los' is: (of the) -- for masculine plural, and so on...

There is a lesson that describes when things are masculine or feminine: http://www.learnspanishhowto.com/when-are-spanish-nouns-feminine-or-masculine-199.php

Very good article. I am a native Spanish speaker, and I think that this is very helpful for anyone that might want to learn Spanish. I learned how to produce the short "o" in English as in "hot," by relating this sound with the Spanish "a" sound. they are very similar, but one has to be careful of not ending up saying hat instead of hot. :-) Very good article, again.

As you can see in Rule 2. above, habló ‘he/she spoke’ (past tense) has an accent mark--the stress is on the last syllable.

Hablo on the other hand, does not. Hablo means 'I speak' (present tense).
